"Beautiful Mountain, Messy Rentals"

April 2008 — "The visual beauty of Lake Louise is undeniable. Skiing down any of its runs is a breath-taking experience, as much due to the scenery as the adrenaline. There are so many runs (132 I think) that finding a reasonably tranquil route is possible even on the busiest day. There's a lot of choice for a beginner like me, with greens even winding down from the very top of the mountain. Once on the slopes, with skis strapped to feet, this mountain is up there with the best. Getting through rentals is a bit of a nightmare though. Visiting Lake Louise on the day before it closed for the season, we expected the rental queue to be a long one. What we didn't expect was that they would have only three staff dishing out the skis - quite ridiculous considering there were about 6 stations and the rentals building was PACKED. When we finally made it to the point of being issued skis, we waited an additional 20 minutes at the station while the staff member helping us just kept disappearing, and in that time waxed two sets of skis which he then decided were not the ones for us anyway. When he finally selected skis for me that he was satisfied with, he proceeded to adjust them to my boyfriend's boot size! All in all, the insufficiently-staffed rentals service, and the apparent inexperience of the rentals staff almost ruined our day. It's just as well the mountain is so dang pretty."

April 2008 — "Other ski resorts might boast more powder, still others enjoy warmer temperatures but it is unlikely that anyone else in North America tops Lake Louise's views. The peaks of the Canadian Rockies in the Banff area are astounding and on a bluebird day make themselves present from practically every run at at the resort. I usually ski at Fernie but completely enjoyed a recent weekend at Lake Louise - the mountain was easy to navigate and explore, there was a great mix of difficult, intermediate and beginner runs and the super-long blue cruisers were great for sunny spring skiing.
